Today I’m linking up with Jessi for her weekly installment of Giving Up on Good. You can read more about the series in this post. Here’s a small summary I found especially compelling:

Instead of perpetuating the lie that you have to do it all well, all early, all efficient – what if we spoke life to one another and imparted grace to one another by waving our white flags and admitting the good things we’ve walked away from to pursue the better things. The things that are right for us?

What if we had a little weekly linkup and you could share one or two things each week that you’ve given up on. Because you know you can serve your family, the Lord, or just keep a sense of peace by focusing your time, energy, talent, resources where He wants it to be.

Her post this morning was just what I needed to finally let go of this nagging, pestering voice inside my head. The one that, every few weeks, tries to convince me that I need to return to UNC Chapel Hill’s School of Journalism for their Master of Arts in Technology and Communication program. I hear all of the reasons swirling around in my head for why it would be a good thing, tempting to stroke my sinful ego with promises of prestige and academia.

Every few weeks I’ll revisit their website, consider taking the GMAT and entertain plans in my head for how I could make it all work.  I always close my laptop and walk away, because let’s face it, now is not the time.  I am humbled to have a growing, thriving business, so I can’t use the excuse that I need it to gain clients.  I have an abundance of professional development resources at my fingertips, some that I regularly devour, so I can’t use the excuse that I live in a space devoid of potential.

So today, I’m letting it go. Chilling out.  Thankfully, I can’t kick myself for not doing this earlier because it’s a brand new program.  Previously, there were no master’s level programs of interest to me.  {Other than my dream to get a Master of Divinity from Duke just for the heck of it after our kids are in college and we’re running a bed and breakfast on the beach…}

It feels good, this letting go of good things we could pursue in honor of embracing the better things we’re called to in this moment.  Like teaching my daughter about life, cooking extra meals for friends who need a pick-me-up, playing at the park with friends and evening walks with Jon and the neighborhood bats.  I’d say, when I really think about it, it’s no sacrifice at all.

quote of the day

A wise friend once introduced me to Mama Monk.  I enjoy her blogs – the challenges, the beauty and the honesty.  This quote summed up how I’m feeling this morning, the day after a refreshing and lovely Mother’s Day:

“And I think: Is there a better word for this moment, this time in my life while these babies learn to be themselves and my husband loves me better and better, while all at once I feel so young and still so rich with age? Sweetness.” {Mama Monk}

high five for friday

May 11th, 2012 | Posted by Christy Knutson in Uncategorized - (0 Comments)

I met Lauren at the recent Raleigh Bloggers shindig and I think her High Five for Friday is a lovely idea.  High Five for Friday is a weekly post about your five favorite things recently. it’s a chance to stop and reflect on the things that you’ve enjoyed over the past week

1. Prepping for tonight’s Swap Party has me ridiculously excited.  I attended a swap party a few years ago with coworkers and after surveying my closet, decided to host one of my own.  Details to come…

2. Selecting and watering our new hanging baskets with this cutie.  After this photo was shot, she proceeded to stick leaves in our fancy watering cans milk jugs and when she would succeed, she’d immediately stop and clap for herself even though she didn’t think anyone was looking. Stop it!  So cute.

3. Last weekend’s Nashville trip!  I spent the weekend catching up with two very special college friends and their delicious babies.  Sawyer happens to be a very cute 10 weeks old.  How sweet is he?!

4. Tuesday night’s C.S. Lewis Book Club.  We discussed God in the Dock and I always leave feeling like the dumbest kid in class. Love. It.

5.  Oh – and speaking of book club – I brought my new friend with me.  Ahem…a Starbucks Cookies & Cream Frappuccino.  I blame Raechel at Finding My Feet for introducing me to this goodness.  Prior to our little lunch date last Friday {while I was in Nashville}, I had yet to find anything in Starbucks that left me craving more.  Thanks, Raechel, for the new addiction and the fun afternoon!

I love a good party and I can celebrate the pants off of just about anything.  Planning details, crafting, having our rooms filled with family and friends, baking, the last hurrah hustle and bustle before guests arrive, favors, memories…all of it.

At the heart of a good party is pure and simple celebration. This acknowledgement that hey – we’re here, we’re blessed, life may not be perfect but God is good so why not get together and share joy?  There’s pain, hurt, sorrow, sin and sickness everywhere you look.  But guess what? There’s also beauty, love, connection, fun and little girls turning one everywhere you look too.

This post is a little overdue but I thought a birthday party breakdown would be fun.  I enjoy gleaning online resources, links and tutorials from others, so I thought I’d share the love. Part of my motivation is purely selfish so that when the next party rolls around I can remember where I found those straws…and how to make tissue pom poms…so here goes:

Theme…or No Theme, Really
First birthday planning often starts with a theme.  I swirled a few concepts around in my head for a while but nothing seemed to be the right fit.  I finally tried to focus on the things Annazalie loves and it became oh-so-obvious: animals!  The girl loves some animals.  I remembered a deck of vintage 1950′s playing cards I swiped at the flea market for $1 about a year ago.  The incomplete deck featured eclectic animals and at the time I grabbed it because I thought that one day I may have a use for those cute graphics.

Invitations
I came across a fabulous vintage-inspired invitation by Loralee Lewis on Pinterest.  Since I was using the graphics from a deck of cards, I knew I had to create my own invite.  Her invites provided my layout inspiration and I went from there.  I scanned the playing cards in, removed the backgrounds and sent these puppies through my home printer.  Not fancy, but it worked.

first birthday party invite Birthday Cake
I had my heart set on a cake from a bakery in my hometown.  Their recipe certainly takes the cake with an almond-flavored base and buttercream frosting. Simplicity was the name of the game and when I saw the fondant bow option I was in love.

  • Cake by Creative Cakes by Rene {Sorry to be the bearer of bad news…but word on the street is they’re closing.  Excuse me while I compose myself.}
  • Homemade cupcakes {I opted to make 2 dozen cupcakes in addition to the cake so that we could save some pennies and go for a smaller cake.  I cheated and used box mix for the base – 1 dozen devil’s food cake chocolate and 1 dozen strawberry.}
  • Cupcake wrappers Michael’s
  • Cupcake icing Cream cheese frosting recipe from an old Southern Living magazine. Decorating compliments of a large, smooth tip decorating nozzle.

Menu
With a lunchtime party I wanted to offer enough food to make a meal but not go overboard.  We didn’t offer a ton of variety since we were expecting around 50 friends and family, making quantity a priority.  I underestimated how much time everything would take the morning of and I got pretty behind. The good news is we had 2 insanely productive and willing grandmothers standing by to step in and whip everything into shape!

  • Chicken salad croissants {Store bought mini croissants + homemade chicken salad.  My mom taught me to make chicken salad and it’s super simple: boil and shred as many chicken breasts as you need, mix with 1/2 Duke’s mayonnaise + 1/2 Miracle Whip until preferred consistency, add a few squirts of mustard and a few dashes of celery salt, salt, pepper + white sugar until the taste is right. How’s that for precision?}
  • Spinach dip in hawaiian bread bowls {Spinach dip recipe minus the water chestnuts because I think they’re gross + hollowed out bread bowls with extra bread for dunking}
  • Cheese balls with crackers {2 options: Armaretto cheesecake & pineapple, both from mixes}
  • Pink popcorn {I was inspired by this awesome recipe I found on Pinterest. Then I got lazy + cheap and used melted pink chocolate and popcorn we had on hand. Not the best outcome, but it worked.}
  • Pasta Salad
  • Drinks {sweet tea, pink lemonade, coffee + iced water}

Decorations
This was the really fun part!  I found myself drifting away from the animal theme for whatever reason, so while the graphics from the invites were woven in through the favors and signage, they didn’t play a large role in the decorations.

  • Tablescape {Thank you, Pinterest, for teaching me that word!  So fun. I headed over to my favorite local fabric store and picked out two coordinating fabrics to use for the table. I was able to iron the edges under instead of sewing anything so as to use the fabric for future homemade gifts. I found the white tablecloth at Tuesday Morning about a year ago and it’s been put to many a good use.}
  • Silhouette Art {My dad treated me to having Annazalie’s silhouette hand cut by a guy at the NC State Fair back in September. The silhouette was black and I was interested in a more subdued look, so I traced the image and colored it grey, printing it on our home printer.  I used two frames I found at the flea market and taped fabric to the wall behind the frames.  I’m planning to paint the frames white, swap out the fabric and use this in a different room year-round.}
  • Serving trays {An assortment of items I’ve found over the years at Goodwill, random flea markets and TJ Maxx.}
  • Pennant banner {There are lots of tutorials floating around out there, but I just printed some digital paper I downloaded a while back at Moo & Puppy on our home printer and glued it to ribbon.  A more frugal option than using fabric for something we didn’t plan to reuse down the road.}
  • Tissue Pom Poms {My new favorite thing!  These guys pack a big punch for pennies.  I used this tutorial.}
  • Flowers {I picked a few packets of whatever this white stuff is from Harris Teeter.  It’s not baby’s breath, but something similar. True story: the vases are still spread throughout our home and the blossoms have dried beautifully. I expect they’ll last all summer!}
  • Highchair {The highchair is usually a focus at a first birthday party and I knew I wanted it to be special.  The highchair we use for Annazalie was mine when I was a wee one, so that’s pretty cool.  I ordered one of those globe balloons – Shop Sweet Lulu sells them – and was super excited to have a simple highchair decoration and call it good.  I didn’t do my research as I should have and at the last minute realized it’s almost impossible to find someone willing to fill them with helium.  So, into the drawer Mr. Globe went and to the grocery store floral section Papa Knutson went.}
  • Drink table {Mason jars from Walmart. Paper straws from Sweet Estelle’s – she’s great and is happy to put together custom listings if you need different quantities. Paper lanterns from Michael’s – the pack included two other colors and I’m saving them all for use in Annazalie’s room down the road. Double-duty, baby!}

Favors

  • The alligator made her return to bid our guests farewell with baby food jars filled with hot chocolate mix and mini marshmallows. I spray painted the lids with paint leftover from the pigs I painted for her nursery.

Activities

  • The Time Capsule that Wasn’t {Let’s start with the major minor fail, shall we? I got the idea to do a time capsule of sorts from this post at Young House Love. I set out cards and pens for attendees to write a note for Annazalie with the intention of her opening it on her 16th birthday…a way for her to get a glimpse of the party that she wouldn’t remember.  It didn’t really catch on and I was too busy to make a scene about it, so I believe we got 2 total.  But cherish, we will, those 2!}
  • Cake Smashing {We put the time for the cake smashing on the invitation – that way people could decide if they wanted to be present for that portion.  So glad we did!  We set Annazalie up with a cupcake of her very own and homegirl ate. it all. ALL OF IT.  Except for a big hunk o’ frosting Jon scooped up in a trophy parenting moment while I was trying not to hyperventilate as the cupcake crumbs made their way onto the floor and in her hair.}
  • Cake Smashing Outfit {I wanted to whip up a outfit for Annazalie to change into so that we wouldn’t have to worry about her getting cake on her dress.  I used the onesie tutorial from Lil Blue Boo and the no-sew tutu tutorial from Skip to My Lou.}
  • Skyping  {What a gift Skype is!  Annazalie’s Aunt Jennifer and Cousin Gentri in Tulsa were able to join the cake smashing virtually.  I’m not sure that it went as smoothly as it could have on our end, but we managed to set up the computer by her highchair and it did the trick.}
  • Gifts  {Although we put Your Presence is Gift Enough on the invitation, we still ended up with lots of goodies for our girl – which, of course, we were thankful for!  We had planned to not have a formal present opening since we intended for gifts not to be a big deal, but as the party was winding down I could tell that some friends with gifts would like to see Annazalie’s reaction to their finds.  So we did a little low-key gift opening and it worked great. Flexibility!}

Photography
Quite possibly the best thing we did was arrange for our family photographer, Ashley Perry Blevins, to be present.  We planned to do quarterly photos for Annazalie the first year of her life, so we combined her 1 year photos with her birthday party.  Ashley arrived a few minutes early in time for us to snap a few photos in the backyard and then she captured the party oh-so-beautifully.  She is insanely talented and we are incredibly thankful to have her.  All photos in this post are from Ashley – I didn’t even have to pick up my camera once, allowing Jon and I the freedom to soak up the experience.

Whew. World’s longest post DONE.  Hope this little post helps someone down the road plan a smashing first birthday party. It was a ton of fun and I learned quite a bit from my mistakes.  Cheers to celebrating life!

my mom is the best

April 29th, 2012 | Posted by Christy Knutson in Uncategorized - (0 Comments)

I just had to share this sweet cake my mom got me for my birthday.  We had a belated celebration yesterday while we were in Dunn.  If there’s one person who taught me that a birthday is a big deal and how to celebrate properly, it was her.  Eat your heart out, friends…because I’m currently eating this:

Sunday night I joined 30ish other Raleigh bloggers for a meet-up downtown.  So fun. And so scary!

I’ve been at this little blog thing for a few years now but it feels so small and cozy and close-knit around these parts.  I was really nervous about meeting up with other “real” bloggers.  Thankfully, there was an eclectic mix of ladies and everyone was welcoming, friendly and fascinating.

The time absolutely flew by and I only got halfway through my DELISH Benelux Cafe Belgian “Wafel” with Nutella spread.  That’s how good it was.  The meet-up, that is. It takes a whole lot of awesome to separate me from a waffle dressed in Nutella.

A big, huge thanks to the evening’s sweet, Southern hosts: Kate, Lauren and Carrie.  Until next time!

Oh and PS – Kate’s hair is just as fantastic in real life as it is on Pinterest!

In honor of my 28th birthday {yesterday}, I thought I would make a little list to reflect.  Here are 28 of my favorite moments from the past year. I’m sure I’m missing some crucial happenings, but these 28 are the first that came to mind. In no particular order:

  1. The Happy Birthday song portion of Annazalie’s 1st birthday party.  Completely overwhelmed when I looked up to see our house packed with friends and family celebrating alongside our girl.  {Long overdue Anatomy of a Birthday Party post to come next week.}
  2. Meeting my perfect little niece, Miss Gentri Eleanor, for the first time.
  3. The phone call from our vet saying that Cletus’s blood work was normal after a week of concern when his drinking/potty habits changed.
  4. Dining with two old friends and one new friend in New York City at Christmastime.  First, it was such a nice feeling to know that even though our friends may live far away {Elizabeth – NYC and Pauline -Utah} distance is not the barrier it once was.  Through technology and travel our world is getting smaller and that is awesome. Also, our dinner reservations were at 9pm. That is not normal.
  5. A few weeks into having Lindy {our crazy awesome nanny} join our family, she showed me Annazalie’s new trick – blowing kisses!  This was pivotal for me…Annazalie and Lindy were both giggling and I just felt peace and gratitude about the decision to accept help and continue the balance of family and work.
  6. Papa and Nana Knutson’s trip to meet Annazalie.  What a special week!
  7. My first “no response” to a submitted proposal for Moxie Speak. I didn’t want to admit it, but they weren’t the right fit for me, nor was I for them. I felt so grateful to have the incredible clients that I do and for not having the pressure of worrying about the next one.
  8. Running my first 5K in the Isle of Palms.  Never before in my life had I ever been able to run 1 mile – not even when I “played” {play is a gross exaggeration} soccer in high school. Thanks for the motivation, Apples!
  9. Bringing home my “new iPad.” I know that’s wildly materialistic, but I really like that thing. The convenience and productivity aspects are the best.
  10. Sitting on The Oceanic pier enjoying local seafood for our Valentines beach weekend.  The day was sunny, the weather was 70 degrees, the seagulls were out {yet not pooping on our heads} and the sea was at its best.  We didn’t have a responsibility in the world other than to enjoy the day and one another.
  11. Driving over the bridge at Wrightsville Beach over and over again. It never gets old…the water, the sails filled with wind.  Never. Gets. Old.
  12. A quick dip in the Fordham Fountain at UNC with a few of my former housemates.  You know…for old time’s sake.  {Never mind that scar on my arm. :) }
  13. Leaving lunch and dinner meetings with creative friends to brainstorm future work ideas.  The world is our canvas and I’ll tell you one thing. I like my job.
  14. Driving to my parents’ home the day after last year’s April 16 tornadoes to find my parents perfectly healthy and my grandmother’s home and farm in tact after one of the twisters went right over them. So thankful.
  15. Canoeing down Falls River with Jon to celebrate his birthday.
  16. Standing beside two of my dearest friends, April and Haley, as they married their best friends.  What an honor.
  17. Nursing Annazalie in general. I’m not exaggerating or being overly sentimental when I say that it’s one of the greatest joys of my life.
  18. Vacationing for a week in Myrtle Beach with dear friends from Illinois, the Culps.  We didn’t take many photos as a group, but this is certainly the best ever photo of Bekah. Must do it again soon!
  19. Looking over at Jon during communion a few weeks ago.  It was the first Sunday babycakes made it through an entire worship service in the nursery.  It was the first time Jon and I had the blessing of taking communion together in who knows how long.  {That says a lot since our church does communion each week.}
  20. Annazalie’s first plane trip on our way to visit Jon’s family in Minnesota.  Not because it was especially smooth, but because it was drenched in symbolism for me.  Confirmation that our life of adventure wasn’t over because we welcomed a baby into our family…our adventures may take a little more work, but traveling will remain a part of our lives. After all, we have so much to show our girl!
  21. Evening walks with Jon and Annazalie, dodging caterpillars on the street and stopping for random conversations with our neighbors. {Most notably our impromptu street “party” to watch the satellite fly by.}
  22. Seeing my Moxie Speak work space/sewing corner come to life.  Work in progress, but it’s oh-so-comfy.
  23. Having Annazalie fall asleep in my lap…these moments are few and far between, but when they happen, I don’t want to breathe for fear of waking her up.
  24. Sunday afternoon dates with Jon at the flea market last fall…sipping hot chocolate and enjoying time together while my parents babysat.
  25. Watching my parents squeal with excitement when Jon and I drive up to their house with Annazalie.  {Don’t worry Mom – no photos!}
  26. The Liberty Antique Festival – mud, rain and all.
  27. Coming across this photo of Jon and John.  Sorry ladies, they’re both taken.
  28. Waking up on my 28th birthday.  Each day is a blessing!

Jon and I were enjoying a weekend afternoon date when it happened.  We were driving through downtown and out of the corner of my eye, in the middle of the most darling Easter display, sat two bunnies.  I seriously yelled, “Stop the car!  We have to park! I have to look at those bunnies!”  After 8 years of togetherness, he knew what to do.  We were going in search of some rabbits.

This will shock my local friends, but up to that point I had never been into Father & Sons Antiques downtown.  I know!  Major fail.

After negotiations on my behalf {ahem…sacrificing my Easter basket} and negotiations on Jon’s behalf {knocking a few bucks off the price} we walked out beaming.  Well…I was beaming. Jon was embarrassed. So embarrassed that he would not allow them to rest in our back seat.  They were assigned a discreet, temporary home in our boot trunk.  As to not scare little children passing by, of course.

Here’s a little before and after action. After joining our family they received a quick bird bath, got new bows, a new ribbon for the girl’s hat and fresh grass.  And yes..I acknowledge that there’s a hint of creep factor in those eager faces.  Perfect!

easter sunday

April 8th, 2012 | Posted by Christy Knutson in Uncategorized - (0 Comments)

Today was just as sunny and celebratory as I hoped.  We have been given great things…a risen Savior, a bluegrass version of There is Power in the Blood for morning worship, a close knit family, dazzling little girl, beautiful place to live and and this little thing called Skype to end the day with far away family.  All these gifts? They point straight to Christ and to God’s abundant love for us.  They point straight to Easter.

Is life always filled with sheer happiness?  Of course not.  The day was also marked by the ever-present, searing loss of Teresa.  Today I walked down to the pond where we spread her ashes instead of trading Easter hugs with her. I watched our Annazalie be enveloped by my family, knowing she will never know her personally. The hopeful news? In both happiness and loss, He is good.  And we give thanks.

easterOh and by the way…yes, those most definitely are shotgun shells and clay pigeons in Jon’s Easter basket.  He’s a lucky man.

Happy Easter!

anticipation

April 7th, 2012 | Posted by Christy Knutson in Uncategorized - (0 Comments)

Today was a sweet day of anticipation. I baked Easter goodies, spent time with my two favorite people, picked up last minute Easter socks for Annazalie and attended the best ever Easter Tea.  What is an Easter Tea, you ask?  It’s fabulousness that overflows with friends you don’t get to see often, fancy Easter hats, good conversation, hot cross buns and homemade cheese straws.

Each year Easter looks and feels different to me. This year, it feels challenging. There is so much to teach our girl.  This responsibility we have been given as parents to Annazalie…it’s weighty. As we read Annazalie the crucifixion and resurrection stories from the Jesus Storybook Bible tonight, it felt like so little. Just a drop in the bucket. On this night as we anticipate the resurrection celebration, my prayer is that our lives will reflect this command:

“You shall therefore lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul…and you shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.” {Deuteronomy 11:18-19}

One of my favorite books was given to me by a friend who clearly knows me well, Lauren.  Treasuring God in Our Traditions by Noel Piper is a book I hope to reread each year. This excerpt speaks to this season of celebration:

Memory is the mother of traditions.  Almost all of our special days are celebrated because they remind us of something significant in the past…Easter looks back to His death and resurrection.  Our celebrations are occasions to look back and remember what God has done in the world and in our lives.

At the same time, we are also looking forward.  The preparations we make and the eagerness we feel as we look ahead toward a special day are a foretaste of the emotions we will experience when we encounter God in a special way as we celebrate.  And the encounter with God is, in turn, a foreshadowing of the great day when we will see Him face to face.”

Happy night before Easter, friends.  Tomorrow is a very big day.
